Title of the LAB: Measuring Silence Noticing Beginnings and Ends

Facilitator(s): Marika Rizzi and Patrick Gaiaudo

Date - time: 05.08.2018 ; 18.00-19.00

Inquiry of the LAB (Questions, Propositions):

Using a strategy or specific personal score did change the practice

Participants:

Shura Baryshnikov, Stephanie Auberville, Anne-Gaelle Thiriot, Susanne Martin, Bastien Auber, Elske Seidel, Jenny Döll, Inna Falkova, Javiera Sanhueza, Gesine Daniels, Jordan Fuchs, Vera Mantero, Alessandro Franceshelli, Emily Bowman, Sabine Sonnenschein, Alejandro Caceres, Romain Bige, Caterina Mocciola, Brandon Gonzalez, Michele Tarento, Irene Sposetti

Documentors: Marika & Patrick

Flow (scores, exercises, discussions…):

Score - by duet

Continuing what you are doing and at the same time observing if something as a common place or sensibility is beginning in between.

In that case say BEGIN and when it seems to be finished say END.

During this process, time is individually noticed.

Reflections (discussions,writing, drawings…):

In the discussion, some of the participants shared different layers/levels of being conected (sound, movement, aesthetic...) and the capability of this score to open different possibilities of being and dancing, even we are (in the duet) on two different ways of composing and observing.

Beginning & ending lab 05.08.2018 Interview with Susanne Martin by Dilek Üstünalan

What was the question of the lab?

About consciousness of or play with, sensing beginnings and endings in our dancing.

And how did you practice it?

It was just 45 minutess activity. Basically they told us (Patrick and Marika) you start a dance and keep registering for yourself moments that you feel as a beginning and moments that you feel as an ending. So I do that only for myself how I sense my beginnings and endings but I verbalize that, say out loud begin and some moments end. So I’m speaking about me and my own experience and my partner also says begin and end but she speaks about her experience and her dance. So we are not necessarily saying begin and end at the same time and it is not also the purpose of it and that made it interesting. It was kind of this overlapping minds being engaged in maybe the same dance but each person has their own experience of the dance and through saying out loud beginning and end we get this layer of what is happening in the mind of my partner a little bit, that was very nice.

Was there a surprise moment for you, that you remember now?

I know this question for a long time. The thing is that it is not a surprise for me it was just nice and playful.. And also what I will say now is nothing is new for me but it is the beauty of improvisation; you meet similar things for years and years but each time they are surprising or they are interesting in some level. So maybe the moments of when constellations happened, like when somehow my partner and me got more separated and somebody else came into the picture so another level of beginnings and endings of having different partnerships happening, which is a totally normal typical thing in contact improvisation but it was still little surprising excitements in that. I moved through very nice, beautiful duet with Marika that moved into a duet with Shura that became a trio with Shura and Bastien. And then around towards the end of the 45 minutes, they said the next beginning is your last beginning. So we knew now this is towards the end and that gave me kind of impulse to connect to more people and we ended a bit like in a bigger group in the center of the room. And then we had reflection time for 10 minutes the whole group speaking about beginnings and endings and what we did. So it was quite a simple open exploration and then speaking about, reflecting about, harvesting a bit different voices from the experience. It was very nice.
